A simple method for regenerating your creativity.

We live in a time of high volume, high speed, and low clarity. Apps, planners, and other tools are insufficient. We feel a desperate need for a holistic and sustainable behavioral framework that enables order, ease, and creativity in both our personal and professional work. There is an actual art to this.

A unique blend of ancient psychology and modern project management, it consists of four specific behaviors that, when habituated, reduce stress, create clarity, and stimulate creativity.

  • It is simple, but subtle.

  • It is refined, but flexible.

  • It allows you to get a sense of control in your life without losing spontaneity.

  • It enables you to effectively engage with asymmetry, curved lines, and surprises as well as more "linear" projects and tasks.

  • It helps you plan a fun birthday party for your kid as well as an impactful strategic planning session for your company.

We guarantee that this will be a life-changing experience for you.If you are looking to simply tickle your curiosity and "learn something interesting" this program is not for you.On the other hand, if you are committed to mastering how you manage your time, to-dos, and knowledge so that you can live an intentional life and die full of integrity, then welcome home.

Why an Art for Workflow?

Problem #1
High Volume, Low Clarity

  • In 2016, 90% of the world’s data had been created in the previous two years. That number has only continued to grow.

  • Most of the information we are hit with is vague and disruptive.

  • The contextual lines of space and time are fading as work becomes progressively remote and asynchronous.

✅ Solution:
A Behavioral Framework
for Clarity, Space, & Order

  • Standardize and streamline the process for defining and organizing information so that it can be habituated.

  • Boil all the theory and principles of workflow down to four specific behaviors so that people can move from reading about productivity to actually being productive.

  • Acquire a universal framework for efficient thinking, which allows you to navigate complex and rapidly changing environments with ease and confidence.

Problem #2
Superficial Hacks, Artificial Methods

  • Productivity gurus tempt us with easy wins and promise that their product will relieve our stress. Their solutions are overly simplistic and can't handle the fluid dynamics of real life.

  • As an alternative to the quick fixes, some adopt highly complex systems that blunt spontaneity and end up costing more time to maintain than to use.

  • There is a deep thirst for a simple but effective methodology that can handle both the kitchen and the boardroom and can restore balance and order in our lives.

✅ Solution:
Principled Productivity

  • Art of Workflow offers a deep, unique, and fresh perspective on the psychology of workflow, blending ancient, medieval, and modern thought. Fads have no home here.

  • Learn the most refined and effective way to manage both your personal and professional work. All the fat is trimmed off for you.

  • Because this is a behavioral framework and not a specific tool, you can apply this methodology to any app or planner. Countless new tools will be developed in the future. This methodology can be used for the rest of your life.

Problem #3
DIY is Expensive & Inefficient

  • Isolating ourselves from feedback and accountability exponentially prolongs our path to mastery.

  • Time is money, and we burn it through unnecessary trial and error.

✅ Solution:
Effective & Affordable Coaching

  • Avoid common pitfalls and costly frustrations.

  • Bulletproof your path to mastery by joining a small group of focused students. Leverage support and accountability to drive change.

  • Receive professional instruction by experienced coaches who are deeply passionate about the art of teaching. We've always taught live, and we always will.

The Four Core Behaviors

Art of Workflow is the habituation of four behaviors which creates clarity, enables order, reduces stress, and stimulates creativity. It is simple but subtle. It is refined, but flexible. It allows you to get a sense of control in your life without losing spontaneity. It enables you to effectively engage with asymmetry, curved lines, and surprises as well as more "linear" projects and tasks. It helps you plan a fun birthday party for your kid as well as an impactful strategic planning session for your company.

COLLECT
Invest in your ideas by externalizing what is on your mind without worrying about its form.

When You Do It

  • Your mind is calm, clear, and engaged in the present.

  • New ideas and surprises are welcomed and explored.

  • Those really good ideas that come at really bad times aren’t lost.

  • You can interact with a flood of information and not get stressed out, fracture your attention, or break your flow.

When You Don't

  • You have a constant gnawing sensation in your head.

  • New and creative ideas stress you out.

  • You subtly avoid opportunities.

  • You miss meetings, forget to follow up, and struggle to transform ideas into action.

PROCESS
Define what you have collected and organize it into lists.

When You Do It

  • You have a simple and standardized method for efficiently handling any kind of input.

  • Your lists are relevant, attractive, and easy to manage.

  • Projects move forward.

When You Don't

  • You play a never-ending game of organizing and reorganizing your work.

  • Your calendar is a place of stress and chaos rather than a source of order.

  • Your desk is covered with sticky notes.

REVIEW
Keep your lists fresh and functional by regularly re-engaging with them.

When You Do It

  • No particular tool is necessary; all tools are sufficient.

  • Work is smooth, subtle, and dynamic.

  • You are balanced.

  • You have perspective.

When You Don't

  • Your system makes you rigid, awkward, stilted, and unable to effectively engage in dynamic environments.

  • You are driven by the latest and the loudest.

MOVE
Make effective action choices with ease
by using your intuition and judgement in combination with your lists.

When You Do It

  • You know that efficient is sufficient.

  • Surprises energize you.

  • Flow is the norm, not the exception.

  • You effectively leverage your energy instead of frustratingly fighting it.

When You Don't

  • You let perfection delay execution.

  • You think productivity is the most important thing.

  • Your day is driven by email, slack, and zoom meetings.

A SUPERIOR COURSE MODEL

Step 1:
Take Flight with the Fundamentals

Your journey begins with a potent series of "ah-ha" sessions delicately designed to deliver illuminating insights for eight consecutive weeks. We call this "The Accelerator." In this condensed period, you will:

  • Instantly reclaim your attention by "removing the chocolate from the counter." Mark Zuckerberg doesn't need to be in your bathroom, your bedroom, or your dining room. Our smartphones are designed to grab our attention incessantly. Not anymore. Together, we will set the tone for the year by re-drawing the boundaries and using specialized software (included in your enrollment) to define a personalized schedule when social media, email, and texts are simply not an option. It will be impossible for you to access them (even if part of you wants to). This feels amazing and the amount of relief it brings will surprise you!

  • Acquire profound perspective by experiencing your entire life flash before your eyes - yes, we mean this literally. Have you ever said no or yes to something when part of you knew you shouldn't? That will be refreshingly hard to do after this. (Week 1)

  • Unclog your cognition. Have you ever cleaned a crowded, messy room and been surprised by how pleasant it is to be in it afterwards? You will learn how to open the window of your mind and finally let some fresh air in. This shockingly simple exercise will enable you to take off the 500 lb backpack you've been carrying unknowingly. Participants describe this behavior as creating a nostalgic amount of space in the head. (Week 2)

  • Understand how to make ease easy by encountering the radical freedom of regularity. Have you ever wasted time by overcomplicating a system in your life? There is a specific reason why you did this. It is explained by what we call the Law of Familiarity. Understanding this law enables you to maintain the subtle, but important, quality of ease in the management of your time, to-dos, and knowledge. (Weeks 3 and 4)

  • Master how to create clarity on command. 99% of the time when someone feels disorganized, their problem has nothing to do with organization and everything to do with clarity. The former is about where a thing goes, the latter is about what a thing is. There is a simple set of questions that brings any kind of idea, impression, feeling, or thought into its clearest form. You will touch each of these questions and practice applying them to specific things in your life that are on your mind. (Weeks 5 and 6)

  • Create a garden for your thoughts that generates deep insights within and across all academic disciplines. Ironically, in the age of the knowledge worker, there has been plenty advice on how manage time and projects, but there has been a noteworthy lack of attention on how to practically manage knowledge. Whether you want to assimilate industry specific information, or create a master system that organically connects all your notes from famous works of literature, you will learn how to avoid all the common mistakes and will experience the regeneration of a deep, joyful, and ordered love of learning. (Week 7)

  • Accelerate and sustain the habitation of your new life skills. With all the pieces assembled, we'll take a step back and understand how everything fits together. (Week 8)

Step 2:
Become Antifragile

From March until January, you will transform the core behaviors of workflow into life-long habits. To facilitate the cementing of these behaviors in your life, you will:

  • Multiply your awareness muscles through a short and effective weekly exercise designed to catalyze your questions and compound your comprehension.

  • Receive detailed and personalized feedback by meeting 1:1 with Andy or Liz every month. This ensures that you have the space and time to address any questions or roadblocks that may come up along the way. This program does not break when life happens. We've designed it around the active expectation of irregular (or unpredictable) events such as a death in the family, career changes, or the onset of major health issues. You will receive support that safeguards and shelters your mastery from these unfortunate, but inevitable "surprises." If you give this program your all, these events, rather than disrupting the learning process, will act like waves that only support the behaviors and provide them with momentum and context. It's easier to maintain good posture when you have weight on your shoulders.

  • Stay stimulated with accountability. Regroup with your cohort at the 6 and 9 month marks. These milestones hold a disproportionate amount of value when every participant comes back together and cross pollinates the insights, questions, and answers they've learned along the journey. These cohort sessions stimulate your sense of accountability and provide carefully timed inspiration and invigoration.

Step 3:
Enrich Your Life

Reconnecting at our one-year anniversary, we'll share our wins and reflect on the transformations that have occurred over the past 12 months. But this ending is really only the beginning. It's time to leverage this art to deepen the relationships in your life and mature the expression of your creativity. With a new sense of peace, presence, and ambition, dreaming takes on a whole new dimension because now you can transform your dreams into realities that enrich the lives of the ones you love. Do you want to revitalize the town you live in? Start a new family tradition of monthly daddy-daughter dates? Build a formal study in your house? Publish a book? Learn how to play guitar?"How" is no longer a question. "How" is easy. Now you simply choose "what."

About the Coaches

Andy Hickman | Head Coach

Andy fell in love with sensing and articulating the structures behind ideas and behavior when studying philosophy at The College of William & Mary. Deeply passionate about the art of teaching, he has spent his entire career in education. After teaching middle school (don't believe the lies, it's great!) and serving as the assistant director for an educational non-profit, he used the Art of Workflow to found Art of Workflow.

What others say about Andy

Liz Hickman | Assistant Coach

Shout out to all the stressed-out moms reading this late at night! Yeah, I can't say I thought Andy was "on to something" when he first started talking about this. "Systems" is a very common word at our dinner table, so it seemed like par for the course. Even if it did work for him and his dorky apps, would it really work when our children are running around, the laundry is backed up, and dinner needs to be ready in an hour? I'm here to tell you that Art of Workflow is "wife tested, mother approved!"

A Message from Andy and Liz

Hi!! 👋We are so excited you found this website and are poking around. If you were to look up "type of people who do not take risks and prefer to spend Saturday nights playing board games" in the dictionary you would see a picture of us! We were essentially forced out of our comfort zone after experiencing first hand the relief and order that this methodology provided us and knowing how much it would benefit others. We proudly live the fun craziness that is family life (the picture above makes us look pretty slick, but usually there is at least one kid on Andy's head and something broken around Liz's feet) and love helping others remove unnecessary stress and frustration from family life. We hope to have the opportunity to work with you in an upcoming cohort!Cheering you on,
Andy & Liz

  • Peer learning environment

  • 1-on-1 coaching

  • Sense of community and social support

  • Safeguarded success with a full year of support

WHY IT'S SO EXPENSIVE

There's an opportunity cost for everything, DIY included! DIY makes sense for a lot of things. Acquiring the Art of Workflow is not one of them! We cannot in good conscience recommend doing this on your own as it will truly be more expensive and less effective. The main reasons for this are:

  • The theory behind Art of Workflow is a unique blend of ancient, medieval, and modern thought and requires a significant amount time to simply read the books that inspired this methodology, let alone understand and integrate their content.

  • This is a particularly subtle art that entails increasing awareness of behaviors that have been subconscious for years. Just as a Crossfit trainer can help bring awareness to your body posture when exercising, a professional coach is able to help you see things that you may initially be blind to!

  • There are a host of common mistakes that are made when attempting to get this workflow off the ground without professional guidance. These burn a lot of time and can be very frustrating.

  • Parkinson's Law: "work expands so as to fill the time available for its completion." When there is no one else outside of you enforcing deadlines, tracking your progression, and providing positive peer pressure, you will take longer to progress.

  • Loss of compounding interest. The sooner you master this art, the soon you reap its benefits of increased efficiency, creativity, and perspective. By taking the slower route of DIY, these crucial increases take effect much later down the road.

Why?

The Art of Workflow Symposium was created in response to 3 main problems in online learning:

🎣 Fish-Hooked Information

  • The internet is becoming a carefully designed trap of endless distractions.

  • Clicks are becoming more important than content.

🤖 Objectification & Inefficiency

  • Students are being viewed as material objects to be stock-piled, rather than as persons.

  • Students are being abandoned and asked to navigate learning without live, professional support.

🧟 Consumption Killing Creativity

  • The very sources of learning are being designed to fracture and capture our attention for the sake of advertisement and financial gain.

  • Watching is replacing reading, subscribing is replacing writing, entertainment is replacing leisure.

Designed for the flourishing of the human person

This symposium deliberately leverages the freedom of constraints through these 4 features:

🍄 Rotting Recordings

  • We've intentionally handicapped the "plan B" in order to cultivate attention and focus.

  • Recordings expire after 11 days. After that, they are gone. No "getting to this eventually." It's now or never.

😍 Face-to-Face

  • All participants are required to have their video on.

  • Speakers and participants give their undivided attention to each other.

🌱 Generative

  • Talks are designed to inspire action and creativity in the participants, rather than directionless curiosity or passivity.

😇 De-Hooked

  • No hijacking or manipulation of your attention through an addictive UI. Imagine us shaking our fists triumphantly at the algorithmic gods! ((✊))

This symposium is an educational outreach project of Art of Workflow, an intentional community of married couples, business owners, and entrepreneurs dedicated to living creative and joyful lives by artfully managing their time, to-do's, and knowledge.

Workflow is a simple and profound behavioral system
for managing your time, to-dos, & knowledge.

Thank you for confirming your registration. I look forward to being with you at the talk!
Warm regards,
-Andy
